Learn More

There are many ways to learn more about how justice is, and is not, being served by US policies in Palestine-Israel and the Middle East.

Some recommendations.

  • Visit Palestine-Israel and see for yourself.
Justice First! is discussing a group trip in 2008. Recommended tour organizers include Global Exchange, Fellowship of Reconciliation, AFSC and Birthright Unplugged. While there, you can take positive actions like helping rebuild a demolished house with ICAHD. If you are an experienced activist, consider assisting the ISM.
  • Talk to local Israelis, Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims
In New Mexico, the UNM student group Salam Coalition has several Palestinian members, and UNM has a Muslim Student Association. The Albuquerque Islamic Center recently held an open house. For pro-Israeli views of a new UNM student group, see UNM Israel Alliance, which has described, for example, the Wheels of Justice tour as poisonous and propaganda.
  • Correspond with an Israeli or Palestinian via email
Many friendly bloggers will correspond about their postings.
  • Attend talks about Palestine-Israel and the Middle East
In New Mexico, see the Albuquerque Peace and Justice Center calendar to get started.
  • Follow the news
A highly recommended daily synopsis of Middle East news, using translated excerpts from regional TV news, is Link TV Mosaic. And for a range of Israeli viewpoints, Haaretz.
  • Read books
Please review and contribute to the Justice First! recommended reading list and book reviews.
President Jimmy Carter's new book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid is short, easy to read and has been widely discussed in recent months. Much more comprehensive is The Gun and the Olive Branch: The Roots of Violence in the Middle East by David Hirst.
  • Watch short videos on the net
To start, see this list by If Americans Knew.
  • Watch films at home
Please review and contribute to the Justice First! recommended film reviews.
Two highly recommended films are Arna’s Children (available through Netflix) and Divine Intervention. Justice First! maintains a list of privately owned videos that can be shared, for home viewing only, by arrangement with the owner via email to info@justicefirstcommunity.org. If you have home videos you'd like to share, please get in touch.
  • Be proactive
The best learning experiences often result from interacting with others. Being proactive opens up opportunities to listen to what others think, to learn how to articulate the issues, and to deepen your own understanding of justice. Join an Internet discussion group. Write letters to editors and government representatives. Interact with others who have opposing viewpoints. Consider joining a rally about Palestine-Israel, for example, the rallies planned for early June 2007 to end the Israeli military occupation.
